#4226 – These Three

Good morning people committed to God’s way of living

Matthew 23:23 NIV Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

These three words leapt out at me as I read this verse: justice, mercy and faithfulness.

Sometimes it’s easy to get focused on only certain parts of Scripture and neglect others. Unfortunately many times the neglected parts are the self-less and Christlike parts. It appears easy to preach righteousness and holy living than to practice justice, mercy and faithfulness.

Now it’s not about one or the other; it’s about both.

But maybe for some of us today, these three words need to be meditated on. Maybe for some of us we need to measure ourselves and check how we are going with these three very important fruits of righteousness.

Here’s a good verse to get us thinking about justice.

Psalms 82:3-4 NIV Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

We have received mercy so let’s make sure we pass it on at every opportunity. Let’s also be people who can be relied on; let’s be faithful people.

I pray we are all characterised by justice, mercy and faithfulness.
