#5728 – Gladness or Grief

Good morning people who honour your parents and bring joy to their lives.

Proverbs 10:1 MEV The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

Today’s BIY fits into a simple category of just one question:

Do you bring gladness to your parents, or do you bring grief to them?

I want to acknowledge that there are circumstances when even wise people can upset their parents. This can even be seen in those who accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. If your parents are from a different religion, deep grief and even a violent separation can be the result. Again, I want to acknowledge this. I honour you if you are being persecuted for righteousness’ sake.

But this is not what this scripture is talking about, and we must not miss the truth because of some exceptions. So, let’s lean in.

As I meditate on this, I am drawn towards the intentionality of wise children when it comes to honouring their parents (of any age).

Wise sons and daughters walk in humility with their parents.

Wise sons and daughters love, serve and honour their parents.

Wise sons and daughters pray for and champion on their parents.

It is true that parents aren’t perfect, but nor are children.

So, permit me to ask you this question one more time:

Do you bring gladness to your parents, or do you bring grief to them?
