Good morning people who yearn to please the heart of the Father.
True repentance is not about feeling sorry that you have been caught when you have done something wrong. This has too often been my experience; a focus on self even in my repentance.
True repentance has a focus on God. True repentance desires to please the heart of God. True repentance is a deep desire to honour God and not to protect self. True repentance is literally about turning away from self, turning towards God, and then living according to God’s heart, God’s patterns and God’s ways.
I believe we need a heart transplant.
Here is a verse that speaks it as plainly as it can get:
Jeremiah 17:9 NIV The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
What are we to do if our own hearts are deceitful?
We let God examine our hearts:
Jeremiah 17:10 NIV “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
David was a man who deeply loved God, and yet he was fully aware that following his own heart led him into great sin. His humility and repentance towards God is an example worth following. David’s words are where it is at for us today:
Psalms 139:23-24 NIV “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Godly people look to God. Godly people ask God to reveal any unclean way in them. Godly people repent and realign to truth. Godly people live dependent upon and joyful in God.
Praise God for the gift of repentance.
