#520 – Fast And Pray

Good morning people who practice spiritual disciplines

Matthew 4:2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.

Fasting and prayer go hand in hand in the Bible. Jesus again set us an example of how to overcome the enemy. There is power in prayer and fasting that many Believers don’t know about. Fasting, along with prayer, is not for the ‘super-saints’ or the New Testament Apostles only. Fasting should be a part of every believer’s life on a regular basis.

The essence of fasting is ‘denying self’. Sound familiar? Jesus Himself told us to ‘deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him’. When we fast, we put aside our desires and wants, be it food, drink, entertainment or an endless list of things that may be important to us, and we focus that time instead on pushing in to God. There is a desperation that goes with fasting. There is an element of Jacob’s wrestle with the angel of the Lord where he said ‘I will not let you go until you bless me’ (Genesis 32:26). There is nothing casual about fasting and it is powerful when coupled with prayer.

Jesus knew this and He showed us how to fight spiritual battles.

Matthew 17:21 This kind (demonic influence) only comes out with prayer and fasting.

Is prayer a regular part of your life? Is fasting a regular part of your life? Maybe this spiritual discipline that was modelled by Jesus Himself is one of the missing keys to your break-through.
