Good morning people who try
Romans 12:16-18 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
There’s a lot in these few verses but the bottom line is we are told to try as much as possible to get along with others. There are several things mentioned that are necessary to do this.
Firstly don’t be proud. Too often we are stubborn and unshakeable simply because we are right and they are wrong. There’s no place for that sort of attitude in our lives. Pride and arrogance always divides rather than brings harmony.
Secondly don’t retaliate. When someone does something wrong to us, we must do better at responding in love. It’s not up to us to judge and pass sentence on others; our responsibility is to forgive, extend grace towards and do all that we can to facilitate reconciliation.
Thirdly do your best. The Bible doesn’t say ‘try to be nice’. The Bible uses phrases like ‘be careful (give thought to, make an effort) and if it is possible, as far as it depends on you’. This is a higher level of effort. Too many times we take the easy way out and say things like ‘well they won’t change anyway’. We must stop focusing on others and start looking at what we can do more to live in harmony. In this area, some of us need to try harder.
