#5433 – True Rest

Good morning people who enter into the God of rest and refreshing.

Exodus 33:14 NIV The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

It is absolutely true that rest involves ceasing from work. We see this clearly throughout God’s Word, including in the following scripture:

Genesis 2:2 NIV By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

It couldn’t be much clearer than this. We were not created to work, work, work, and not to regularly cease from the work that we have been doing. To do so is to violate God’s Word.

But rest is not only ceasing from work.

True rest is found in God’s presence. True rest is entering more deeply into God Himself.

The clearest scripture on this is such a familiar scripture, but it is worth repeating today. Look at what Jesus said:

Matthew 11:28-30 NIV Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The opening words of Jesus in the first verse declare that rest is something He gives when we come to Him. This is deep and wonderful and powerful. This is life-giving.

The next two verses explain clearly that it is about our connections to Him (being yoked) and learning from Him about who He is and what He is like; He is gentle and humble in heart.

This scripture is more about God than it is about us. In fact, all of scripture is more about God than it is about us. Reading it this way changes everything.

Are you weary and burdened today?

If so, come to Jesus – HE is who you need.
