#5640 – Chief Cornerstone

Good morning people who align your life to the one cornerstone who is Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:19-20 NIV Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.

God is spiritual, His family is spiritual, and His kingdom is spiritual. ‘The church’ is not a natural organisation. It is a spiritual family.

Like a natural family, there are parents and children, and there is order and structure. It is not about measuring against someone else for a negative comparison. It is simply the way that God created it and intends it to function in a healthy way.

Unfortunately, there are too many negative examples in natural families. While some families are a source of joy and celebration, others can be a place of deep hurt, anguish and pain. We must be more sensitive to where people are at and to what people are going through.

Equally, we must also not reduce down or limit God’s spiritual family to the measure of our natural families – good or bad. This includes how the family functions and grows according to God’s pattern and design.

The truth is, God appoints and uses people to lead His church on His behalf. He used the early apostles, and He still uses people today. It is not to build their own thing, but it is to build according to the blueprint of heaven.

That said, the most important thing that I feel to draw our attention to today is this: Christ Jesus Himself is the chief cornerstone.

So, what does this mean?

My wife Sally has shared recently about this insightful truth in Christ As Cornerstone. In a building, the cornerstone is the first stone laid, and it is from this stone that every other stone is aligned. While natural measurements are measured away from a fixed point, spiritual measurements are always measured towards the cornerstone of Jesus Christ.

In other words, it is not about numbers, statistics, growth or comparisons against another, but God’s measurement for every person and His church is this: Are we moving towards Christ?

Let’s lean in more tomorrow.
