#5374 – Being a Disciple

Good morning people who commit your life to following the Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 16:24-25 NIV Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

I heard the phrase, “Many Christians, few disciples.”

The truth is, Christians and disciples are meant to be synonymous words; there shouldn’t be any difference.

Yet sadly, too many today are content to just be saved.

There is a mentality of “I’ve done my part”, and if I may be so bold, I feel that many feel like they are doing God a favour when they occasionally go to church.

Jesus painted a very different picture with His clear instruction on what it means to be a disciple.

Disciples deny themselves. Disciples take up their cross. Disciples follow Jesus. Disciples lay down and lose their life for the sake of Christ.

In this age of entitlement and the cult of self, this doesn’t appeal to many. In fact, it is too often rejected as legalistic.

The result of this rejection is never increased freedom – although this is what is claimed.

The result is always deception and license – a straying away from truth.

It’s time to return to normal Christianity. It’s time to return to denying self, taking up our cross and actually following Jesus. Nothing else will do.
