#45 – Follow Advice

Good morning disciples of Christ

2 Chronicles 10:8 But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

Throughout Bible times, and even to this day, wise people learn from those older than themselves. We see many examples in both the Old and the New Testaments of people following people; learning from them and following their example. This tragic story in 2 Chronicles 10 could have again been avoided but Rehoboam chose to listen to and follow the advice of his friends rather than his mentors and advisors.

I have two things to say on this. Firstly you must have spiritual mentors, coaches, advisors, parents (whatever term you use) in order to grow. We not only can’t, but we shouldn’t, do life alone and think that we will stay on track without the wisdom of others.

Proverbs 11:14 (MSG) Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances.

Secondly, and hear me clearly here, seeking advice is only half the equation; Rehoboam did this of his advisors; we must follow advice. So many hear, don’t like what they hear and seek other advice. Many want to hear the things they want to hear but the growth comes in hearing and following that which we don’t want to do. Spiritual growth is largely about submission to both God and others. For some of you today this is a call to pick up that which you have let slide; for some this might be brand new; for some this might be confirmation
