#2024 – What Is Lovely

Good morning people who think on things that are pleasing to God

It’s time to think on whatever is lovely.

Philippians 4:8 (NIV) Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

This word lovely means ‘friendly towards, acceptable, pleasing’.

This is an interesting word. Here’s what I see:

Firstly, we should choose to think about things that we desire to be friendly towards. This will empower us to say NO to many things we allow ourselves permission to think about. Many of us would say we don’t want to be friendly towards anger, lust, anxiety, malice or fear…none of these are lovely and we don’t want to be their friends. Therefore if we don’t want to be friendly towards something, don’t think about it – choose not to think about it.

Secondly, we should choose to think about things that are acceptable and pleasing. But the question is “Who is it acceptable and pleasing to?” Our answer needs to be God. Many things that people choose to think about are lovely to people but unlovely to God. He is the One we should live for and desire to please.

“So today, what are you going to choose to be friendly towards? Will you choose to think about whatever is lovely to God?”
