Good morning people with a purpose
What was David’s response to the story in 1 Samuel 30 that we looked at yesterday?
1 Samuel 30:6 David was greatly distressed because the men where talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.
This phrase ‘found strength’ means encouraged; ‘and David encouraged himself in the Lord’. Wow! Here’s a man who is deeply distressed and his friends want to kill him but he encourages himself in the Lord. I want to draw out three things here that leapt out at me.
Firstly we need to keep our focus on God, not the problems. Problems overwhelm and cause us to lose heart. God must remain our source of comfort and strength. The Bible says ‘God is our strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe’. We must be intentional about this; we must ‘run into it’, it’s not automatic.
Secondly rely upon the Holy Spirit. We have the privilege of living after Christ and we have been given the precious Holy Spirit who promises to be our Comforter. For me personally I find incredible strength comes from speaking in tongues. The apostle Paul was one who went through so many traumas and yet was an amazing example of worshipping through challenges. One of his keys was that he spoke in tongues more than everybody.
Finally it says ‘David encouraged himself’. Too many times we are waiting for the situation to change or for someone else to lift us up. We do need to lean upon others for strength but we must take the initiative to find our strength in God. We need to lean on people but rely on God. Today you can do this.
I pray you find strength in the Lord today.
