Daniel 1:8 (NIV) But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

I love this verse.

Daniel is a young man who had been taken captive by the enemy. He was now living in enemy territory, and worse than that, he is being trained in the ways of the enemy so that he could serve them.

If anyone had the “right” to get bitter and angry and resentful, it was Daniel…and Joseph…and David…and Paul & Silas…but let’s get back to Daniel.

Daniel kept his heart pure and undefiled, even though he was treated unfairly. This is what set him up for greatness; an uncontaminated heart.

“What is the state of your heart as a result of your difficult situation?”
