#857 – Much Is Given

Good morning people who have received so much

Luke 12:48b From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

‘To whom much has been given, much is required.’

How we live is determined by which part of this statement is primary in our focus.

So many times our focus is on what is required from us. This can be in our relationship with God, with our family, with our work, with our ministry…just generally in life. It’s so easy to focus on the demands that are put on us.

But in this powerful verse I see two parts. Yes I see much is required, but I also see much has been given. Why do we focus on what is required more than what is given?

In Matthew 18:21-35 Peter asks Jesus how many times we need to forgive others; how much is required from us. Jesus answers with a parable about the unmerciful servant. In summary this servant was forgiven a HUGE debt; one that was unpayable. He went out rejoicing but soon found someone that owed him a little amount. His response was completely unmerciful and his end was terrible.

This servant focused more on the little that was owed to him rather than the HUGE amount he had been forgiven. Jesus’ answer to Peter’s question was a reversal of focus. Peter asked how much is required of me
