#716 – Correct Perspective

Good morning people with a faithful and just God

The son made a decision to come home and he acknowledged his sin against his father and against heaven. This is a healthy place to start. But what we do next often makes us or breaks us. Please listen carefully.

Luke 15:18-20a I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men. So he got up and went to his father.

The son now makes two statements; one is true and helpful and the other is untrue and potentially debilitating. Many live by the second statement and suffer the consequences of this false belief. May you be set free today in Jesus’ Name.

The son said ‘I am no longer worthy to be called your son’. This is true. Sin separates us from God and in our sinful state we are not worthy in and of ourselves. I know that my heart has a gravitational pull towards sin and that when I give in to it I am not worthy by my own efforts to be called God’s son.

But the sons’ next statement reflects wrong thinking. He said ‘make me like one of your hired men’. When we sin, are we worthy because of what we have done? No. When we sin and repent, are we worthy because of what Christ has done? Yes, most definitely! That’s why this statement is so wrong. It sounds like a humble and submissive statement but in actual fact it is a diminishing of what God has done for us.

It’s time to accept God’s forgiveness because we are not worthy in and of ourselves. But it is also time to then take our rightful place as sons and daughters of the Living God! The enemy wants you to live feeling unworthy after you have received grace. I’ll be honest
