#681 – Only One God

Good morning people who know the one true God

1 Corinthians 8:4 So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one.

There are not many Gods; there is only one. There are however many gods (note the small ‘g’). Many people have unfortunately given the place in their lives reserved for God to another god.

Now here’s the tricky part for some. Although there is only one true God, God is plural, not singular. Let me go a little deeper because it is essential that we get our theology of God correct.

The word ‘God’ in the above verse is the Greek word ‘theh’-os’. It means ‘Deity, the Supreme Divinity’. This is therefore saying there is only one Deity; there is only one Divinity. Now have a look at the next verse.

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “let us make man in our image, in our likeness…

This word for ‘God’ is different; it is used many times in the Bible and speaks of the plurality of the one true God. The word ‘God’ here is the Hebrew word ‘el-o-heem’ and it is ‘specifically used in the plural of the supreme God.’

There is only one God and that is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit; all is God yet God is one. You can’t choose one and not the other; they are complete together and we must receive all otherwise we don’t receive any.

Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God (‘el-o-heem’
