#648 – God First

Good morning people who love God dearly

We are picking up the story where Cain has just killed his brother Abel. God has told him what his punishment will be. Now Cain responds and there are a couple of things in what he says that show us why he fell.

Genesis 4:13-14 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

Firstly do you notice his language and focus? There is a whole lot of ‘my, I and me’s’ in Cain’s response. There is no sense of repentance or even an apology; the focus is completely about him. Cain is a selfish individual who when confronted with his sin focused on what was most important to him; himself.

The second thing I see is something we must all examine in our lives. When Cain outlined his punishment, notice the order of what he said. Number one was he would be driven from the land which he loved so much and number two was he would be hidden from God’s presence. Cain had wrong priorities. He was concerned that he would no longer enjoy God’s presence but he was more concerned with leaving his own land.

God’s rightful place in all of our lives is number one. If Cain had lived like this, he would not have killed his brother.

Where is God in your life? Do your actions match up with your words? Is He most important in your life? Is abiding in His presence more important to you than your relationships? Your job? Your church? Your entertainment? Your dreams? Number one; that’s the only place for God.
