Good morning people with healthy respect
I see a great respect that Joshua and Israelites had for Moses and it was echoed by God Himself.
Joshua 1:2a (The Lord to Joshua) Moses my servant is dead.
Joshua 1:13a (Joshua to the Israelites) Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you.
Joshua 1:17 (The Israelites to Joshua) Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as He was with Moses.
We too need to respect those who have led us in past seasons.
You might say “Well that’s great for Joshua and the Israelites but my past leaders didn’t do things right”. Moses wasn’t perfect (remember he didn’t make it to the Promised Land due to disobedience) and neither are any of us. I have been disappointed and hurt by past leaders, just like many of you have, but I can honestly say that I learned some wonderful things from them. I, as a leader, have also unfortunately hurt and disappointed people. Grace is needed by all of us; receiving it and giving it.
So what’s our focus? Complaining or thanks? This is a big subject and I know your story is unique but here are two little thoughts for us to consider today.
1. Think of one thing you learned from a past leader. Give God thanks for it and for them. Go a step further: write them a thank you note.
2. We often are celebrating success today because of the sacrifice of those who have gone before. Again, stop, reflect and give thanks.
May we all show the respect that we would like to receive as we extend grace and give thanks.
