#563 – Seeing God

Good morning those who want to see God

I feel challenged to go a little further with the following verse.

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Many times we get bogged down because we are trying not to do the wrong thing. The problem with this can be that we are still focusing on the wrong thing.

Lisa McInnes-Smith recently gave a great illustration on LightFM radio. She mentioned the old habit of getting students to repeatedly write something on the blackboard to get them to stop doing it. An example is ‘I will not talk in class’. Lisa explained this is still a focus on the negative, in this case ‘talking in class’. A better thing would be to write ‘I will be quiet in class’. This replaces the negative with the positive; the ‘I will not’ with the ‘I will’.

The same applies with the things of God. I’ve mentioned before that God gives boundaries to keep us free from negative consequences. Yet we so often focus on the consequences and not the freedom. I’ve also mentioned my dad’s wisdom of ‘the way to get darkness out of a room is to turn on the light’.

Here’s my simple suggestion today. A better way to live life with purity of heart is to turn your attention to what that freedom will give us; great relationships that are honest and transparent and a closer walk with God. The verse above says ‘we will see God’. WOW! Let’s focus on that. Let’s pray that God reveals Himself to us. Let’s focus on the benefits of purity and let that positively lead us forward. Focus on the light, not on the darkness.
