#533 – Poor In Spirit

Good morning people of humility

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Poor in spirit’, what does that mean?

This phrase is talking about humility. One translation says ‘those who rate themselves insignificant’. Now I’m not saying we should go around with the motto ‘woe is me; I am a worthless worm’. No, that would be wrong because God has made us into His ‘treasured possessions’, His ‘masterpiece’. We are uniquely special and wonderful to Almighty God!

This is talking about not elevating ourselves as better than others. The Bible talks so much about humility because the opposite of it, ‘pride’, causes so much division and hurt in relationships. The greatest way to walk humbly is to ‘not think of ourselves more highly tnan we should’ and to ‘treat others how we want to be treated’. Every person is valuable to God and therefore should be valuable to us. Humility is love in action.

Now look at the promise of God for the humble. He promises spiritual authority; that’s what the kingdom of heaven is. What an incredible link. God’s desire is for those who are poor in spirit (humble and loving) to be spiritual warriors. Humility is not weak and soft; humility is a key to spiritual strength and power.

1 Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.
