Good morning people who want to know the Father more.
John 14:7-9 NIV “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
As I meditate on God’s Word, I see something here that I haven’t seen before. Let me try to share it with you.
Jesus started talking about knowing Him and knowing His Father. Then He adds the phrase, “and have seen Him (the Father).” Then Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
I always thought that this was Philip effectively saying, “Yeah, we know You Jesus and You are wonderful, but we just want to see the Father; that’s our greatest desire.” Now I’m not so sure this was what he was saying.
I think Philip was so focused on the enjoyment of knowing Jesus, that he (and many others even today) wrongfully thought, “We don’t really need to know the Father – we know you! But if You want to show us the Father, that’s enough for us. As long we know You Jesus, a quick glance at the Father is enough.”
To this, Jesus says, “Don’t you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?” In other words, “Haven’t you caught on to the truth that My purpose is to connect you with the Father? This is why I have come to earth!”
Jesus earnestly desired His disciples to know His Father. He still deeply yearns for this for you and I today.
