#4696 – Foundation of Obedience

Good morning people who build your life upon obedience to God’s Word

We must know God and we must know His Word. But knowledge alone – including revelation of the Truth – is insufficient to living a truly fruitful life.

We quoted Matthew 7:24-27 yesterday; the parable about the wise man who built on the rock and the foolish man who built on the sand. We discovered that the only difference between these two people who both heard the words of Jesus was their obedience or disobedience to what they heard.

I want to highlight one other part of this verse that really shows the importance of obedience to Truth:

Matthew 7:24-27 NIV “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

In context, the foundation of rock that this wise man built on was not Jesus and it was not hearing the words of Jesus. The foundation of rock was this wise man’s obedience to the words of Jesus.

Obedience is underrated and understated!

After King Saul disobeyed the Lord (all in the name of sacrificing the best to God), here’s what the prophet Samuel declares:

1 Samuel 15:22 NIV But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”

Obedience pleases God. Disobedience does not.
