Good morning non-religious people

There’s an incredible story in John 5 about a man who was an invalid for thirty-eight years and Jesus healed Him. This man who had been waiting for a touch of God was radically healed; he picked up his mat and walked. What a great story! Obviously all who heard it praised God and worshipped Him…well take a look at the good, law-abiding religious people of the day.

John 5:10 The Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

Hang on a moment! This man has just been radically healed and all they’re concerned about is him carrying his mat?!?! I don’t know about you but my spiritual mature response is “You idiots!” Here’s a man whose life has been changed and all they can see is an infringement of the law. Am I saying the law is wrong? No but let’s remember the purpose of the law; it’s there to point us to God.

So what were the Jews response to this amazing, miracle working, life-changing Son of God?

John 5:16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted Him.

God help us never to become religious; help us to focus on seeing people’s lives changed
