#393 – In Your Power

Good morning people who do the good they can

Can we fix every problem in the world? No. Can we meet every person’s needs? No. Does God expect us to? No. But He does expect us to do good to the people He places across our paths. I believe God allows us to be aware of some people’s problems so that we can be part of the solution. God brings people across our paths, not so that we can simply feel their pain, but so that we can meet their needs.

Luke 16:22-24 The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, “Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.”

What’s interesting to note here is that the rich man recognised Abraham and Lazarus. We will look at the importance of recognising Abraham tomorrow but for the moment let’s look at his recognition of Lazarus.

There wouldn’t have been introductions on that other side of the grave; this rich man recognised Lazarus from earth. This means that he was aware of the beggar while he was on earth living it up and enjoying life. He was not only aware there was a destitute beggar living outside his gate, but he even knew his name. How do you think a rich man knew a beggar’s name? He would have asked someone about him. Yet did he meet his needs? Did he give of his plenty to meet the most basic of human needs, hunger? Did he have any sense of responsibility to use that which he had to help others? The answer is no.

He was living for himself. I believe this is something that grieves the heart of God. Living for self is a curse that separates man from God and man from man. Living for self and meeting our own needs as a single-focused priority in life is contrary to the heart of God.

God is looking for people to live for Him and for others. God is looking for people who meet the needs of those whose names they know. God is looking for people who understand they can’t change every life but they can change some. God is looking for people who live life with open eyes and hearts to show His love to those who need it.

Will you be such a person?
