#3881 – Who’s In Control?

Good morning people who are Holy Spirit led in every situation

“Is drinking alcohol wrong for a Christian?”

I used to think so, and my reasoning (to me at least) was valid. This is what I was taught, and I had seen (and heard of countless more stories) of Christians drinking too much and being influenced in their actions by intoxication (and there’s a sliding scale here).

Therefore, due to excess and abuse, I believed Christians should not drink at all.

Yet the Bible does not say this. In fact, Jesus turned water into wine, and there are other scriptures that seem to affirm drinking a little alcohol as being acceptable (1 Timothy 5:23 being one of them).

But there is also a very clear scriptural instruction to not be drunk and to not be controlled by anything other than the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18 NIV Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:12 NIV I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

“Would Jesus have the personal freedom to have a drink of alcohol?”

I think so.

“Would Jesus get drunk?”

Absolutely not!
