Good morning children of God
Ephesians 5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.
We are instructed to imitate God. What a powerful concept! In all of life; in our dealings with people, our responses, our actions, our thoughts, our words, we are told to imitate God. In other words we must ask ourselves “What would God do? How would God respond, speak, act or think in this situation? What motivates God?” and then we should imitate Him.
How do we do this? This verse gives us a picture of how it should work. This uses the illustration of children that have a great relationship with their dad. Have you noticed how little kids that look up to their dad try to imitate them? They watch us and they copy us. They do this in their speech; good or bad. They do it in their actions; good or bad. They do it in their attitudes; good or bad. You see in many children the desire to be ‘just like dad’.
The great thing is our wonderful God is always a good example and following His example is absolutely essential to living this gift of life in a pleasing way to Him. Our greatest desire should be to hear words such as “Like Father; like son”.
The Bible is full of verses that tell us what God is like so that we can imitate Him. I encourage you to read the precious wonderful Word of God with this question in mind, “What does this show me about God?” For today, have a look at the verse before and the verse after this instruction; it reveals a lot about God.
Ephesians 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Ephesians 5:2 Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
