#3669 – Don’t Boast

Good morning people who have a healthy reliance on the sovereignty of God

1 Corinthians 13:4 NIV LOVE is patient, LOVE is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

While envying is ‘greatly desiring what someone else has’, boasting and being proud is ‘greatly inflating who we are and what we can do’.

God knows best, and we need Him. Yet prideful boasting declares, “I can do it myself, and I have done it myself!”

Our lives are meant to point people to God and the majesty of Who He is. Prideful boasting further brags, “Look at me! Look at what I did! Look at what I can do!”

Of course pride is normally more subtle than this, but it is nonetheless self-gratifying and self-focused.

In John 5:19 Jesus said He can’t do anything by Himself without His Father.

In John 15:5 Jesus also tells us that without Him, we can do nothing.

The antidote to pride is a healthy and right revelation that we need God.

Acts 17:28a NIV For in Him (Christ) we live and move and have our being.
