#2313 – Why And What

Good morning people who desire truth above their own desire and opinion

“Why do you go to church? Why do you go to Bible College? Why do you have those conversations about God? Why do you want to know more about God?”

Why we do what we do in life is important.

Matthew 2:7-8 (NIV) Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”

What a wonderful thing! Herod wanted to be told where Jesus was so that he could worship Him! But not all things are as they appear to be. Not all motivations are as pure as they are stated.

Matthew 2:13b (NIV) …for Herod is going to search for the child to kill Him.

I have a simple challenge to us all today: What is the why behind our ‘spiritual pursuits?’

At times, Christians can argue points of theology, not to seek truth, but to be right. Unfortunately this happens too often: Denomination against denomination, in spiritual pride, arguing their point of view, and family members against family members, seeking to win an argument about spiritual ‘truth’.

Christians and non-Christians alike today are often having conversations about what is actually ‘right or wrong’ with little respect for what the Bible states. ‘Truth’ has become subjective, ‘pride’ has replaced ‘humility’, and ‘being right’ has trumped ‘knowing truth’.

It’s time to seek to know ‘truth’, not to be correct. Truth is what God says, not what is culturally acceptable or politically correct.

It’s time to be honest about the ‘why’ behind our ‘what’.
