#2137 – Temptation’s Timing

Good morning people who keep God as the priority of their life

Matthew 3:16-17, 4:1(NIV) As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.…Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Here we have Jesus being baptised, the Holy Spirit come on Him, and His Father publicly affirm His relationship with Him and His love for Him. What a mountaintop wonderful experience! Surely this would ensure Jesus “floated” through His next week on the back of such an experience!

Well actually, no. From there,Jesus went straight into being tempted by the devil several times. Have you ever noticed that some of your strongest temptations come after your greatest spiritual times with God? Why is that?

I feel God is saying that temptations after wonderful spiritual experiences are a test to see if God Himself or the “experience” is most important to us. Subtly we can live from “experience” to “experience” when we should be living in intimacy with God Himself. I think these temptations are God allowed; the devil wants to persuade us that our walk with God is not as good as it is, and God wants to know that Who He is to us is more important than what He does for us.

So don’t fear temptation – God is faithful and will show you the way of escape. Celebrate “experiences” in God, but don’t allow them to ever become more important than God Himself.
