#2017 – God’s Friend

Good morning people who pursue God for the right reasons

James 2:23 (NIV) And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.

Friendship with God is not a means towards an end, even excellent ends such as life transformation or to receive power to serve God. It does indeed fuel both of these wonderful causes, but it must never be pursued primarily for these or any other causes.

Friendship with God must be pursued for this very reason only, friendship with God.

To pursue friendship with God for any other reason but to desire friendship with God is to misuse our position as a friend of God. It would be the same as having a friendship with an influential person in order to gain something from them – it is an abuse of the friendship; it is using the friendship. No person or God wants to be used.

Now there is nothing wrong with spending time with someone with the intention of asking them a question or even to ask them to do something for us. At times we all have asked our friends for something. This is OK. But it is never OK to pursue the friendship for the purpose of asking them for something. Again this is using a person for selfish gain and that is never acceptable.

“So, why do you desire greater friendship with God?”

This year I pray we all desire greater friendship with God simply because we want to be with God, know Him better and love Him more. Everything flows from this, but nothing must replace the right purpose for friendship.
